Focus On Your Career By Focusing On Your Skills
Sometimes the job market can seem like a pretty daunting place with so many people vying for every job. One great way to set yourself apart from the rest of the pack is to increase and improve your skill set.
List your skills
Not sure where to start? Like with so many other things, a list is a great way to help you put your thoughts in order. Make s list of all the skills you already have, no matter how varied or obscure.
Now go through that list and determine which of those skills you’re really good at, and which ones could use a bit of work. Circle the ones you need to work on. Those are the ones you’ll want to focus on if you want to buff up your skill set.
Once you’ve determined which skills you’d like to improve, turn to Google and start your research. Are there online tutorials that could help? Are there any local classes you could take on nights or weekends? Maybe an online course?
It’s much easier to improve upon skills you already have than to learn entirely new ones, but if you have something you want to learn from scratch that’s also a great idea!
Learning new skills or improving upon the ones you already have is one of the smartest things you can do for yourself and your career.
There will always be a use for new skills – whether it’s a new language (a great free app for that is Duolingo), learning HTML coding, or figuring out Photoshop. Even things that seem frivolous to a career like painting or dancing will teach you lessons beyond the skill that you can apply in all sorts of situations.
By improving your skill set you'll soon be head and shoulders ahead of the crowd!
