The Job Window

Neil deGrasse Tyson is the director of the Hayden Planetarium. He’s an astrophysicist, cosmologist, author and podcast host. In 2014 he hosted Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey, based on Carl Sagan’s series Cosmos: A Personal Voyage.

You know how Neil went from the Bronx where he grew up to becoming the go-to guy in cosmology circles? He knew where he was going. When Neil was nine years old he went to visit the Hayden Planetarium. That visit sparked a lifelong interest in astronomy. In high school he made regular visits to the planetarium to attend astronomy courses. Following his dream to find a way to communicate the universe to others he was editor in chief of the Physical Science Journal. From there he went on to do his undergraduate in physics at Harvard and a masters in astronomy at the University to Texas.

From the time he was nine years old, Neil always knew exactly where he wanted to go. The choices he made throughout his life kept him on that path.

You don’t have to decide on your dream job when you’re nine years old. You can be nine, you can be twenty-nine, you can be ninety. The key to getting anywhere and doing anything is knowing where you want to go and doing what needs to be done to get there. Every step you take will get you closer to your destination!
